Totally unsuitable for rats
This cage is far too tiny for rats. The little tube supplied is way too narrow for any adult rats to fit through! The smaller bar spacing makes it suitable for mice or hamsters, providing that extra toys and accessories are added to alleviate boredom. Even then, the animals would need some time out of the cage each day. The cage is quite quick and easy to keep clean, although the shelf can be fiddly to remove. There is a small door in the top and also at the front, making access easy when adding any hanging toys inside the cage.
Overall not a bad cage, just no good for rats!
Not a rat cage
I have owned this cage many years ago for a rat. I hated it.
Firstly it is too small for one rat, I was a child when I had that cage but even then I wanted something bigger, but decent sized cages were in very short supply. But got a bigger cage anyway and got a friend for her, both I and her were happier.
Secondly the shelf is very awkward to get in and out to clean. It's a nightmare and I almost cracked it several times. The door makes it difficult to put your hand in and not big enough to take out a rat of any size!
I would recomend it for a syrian hamster, but even then the shelf lets it down, if you should ever break the shelf or remove it for cleaning it leaves this huge gap in the side (to slide it out) which the hamster can escape from. Or if it is a bad chewer it would have chewed it's way out in a shot.
If you want a rat cage look for a freddy or a furet cage, they are much better designed with nice large doors on the front.
